Canadian Armed Forces aviation fuel usage is the single largest emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the federal family, contributing to approximately one-fifth of the government’s total emissions. In 2017, the federal government mandated the Department of National Defence to develop strategies to decarbonize their fleets. Departmental GHG emissions tracking is currently focused on financial tracking and obtains total general fuel consumption only. Due to this methodology, there is a lack of robustness in the data that hinders the ability to conduct further analysis in support of management decisions. Information such as engine type, operating conditions, and other significant variables have direct effects on GHG emissions but are not collected in this basic approach. Using a case study method, aircraft performance monitoring is carried out in the frame of fuel conservation to establish a baseline of fuel consumption. Resulting trends will be used to perform statistical analysis, optimize fuel efficiency, and define fuel policy.


The RMC Green Team is a research group that provides expert advice and conducts studies related to sustainable management of infrastructure and the environment for the military community and other Federal Government agencies in Canada. The group primarily conducts multi-year, strategic programs and has created a comprehensive database on DND and CAF issues as a resource for optimizing processes and providing quality management in projects. The team is known for their technical expertise and research-based approach to monitoring, assessment, and data analysis in order to optimize management and operations within the CAF and DND.

CAPTAIN KEVIN ST-JEAN joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2013 under the regular officer training plan. He graduated from the Royal Military College in 2017 with a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently completing a Masters of Applied Science with a specialization in Environmental Engineering under the RMC Green Team. After graduation, he worked in a number of roles including as a contracts officer, building services officer, and officer commanding. In 2021, he was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq on Operation Impact, the Canadian Armed Forces contribution to enhancing stability in the middle east.
