The Energy Transition is a global shift from fossil-based energy (i.e., oil, gas, coal) to renewable sources of energy (i.e., wind, solar, hydroelectric, etc.). Decarbonizing the electricity and utilities sector is foundational to achieving the energy transition and resulting net-zero economy. Actions of the Federal Government continue to drive the energy transition, including decarbonization of electricity supply and fuel-switching. Actions of the Government of Ontario align with broader economic development strategy with recognition of corporate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) mandates. There is continued pressure on Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) and other utilities (Gas, Water, Wastewater) to prepare and adapt to the energy transition, and opportunities to provide new services. The presentation will provide an overview of the efforts of Kingston Hydro and Utilities Kingston to adapt to the energy transition.
Kingston Hydro Corporation is owned by the Corporation of the City of Kingston. The Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of three independent directors and three directors appointed by position. The independent directors are appointed by the Shareholder, the Corporation of the City of Kingston, represented by the elected municipal councillors. Kingston Hydro benefits from a multi-utility services delivery model, provided by Utilities Kingston, to ensure cost savings and superior services for its customers. Our vision is to be a modern, responsive energy company, building a strong future for communities and customers through stewardship, partnership, innovation and service excellence.
Utilities Kingston is owned by the Corporation of the City of Kingston through a holding company. Its mission is to manage, operate and maintain community infrastructure to deliver safe, reliable services and a personal customer experience. Its unique multi-utility model, which combines water, wastewater, natural gas, electricity and telecommunications services all under one company, allows Utilities Kingston to achieve its mission in a customer-focused and cost effective way. The multi-utility structure enables the complex choreography of multiple work programs leading to the timely and cost effective completion of the work. The Company benefits from a shared services model for activities, equipment and systems, ranging from customer care, billing, locates, metering and some operational functions such as a common operations centre.
