HOW EKSTERA'S STIRLING ENGINE CAN USE WASTE HEAT TO REVOLUTIONIZE SUSTAINABLE ELECTRICITY

March 7, 2025

The world is currently in need of sustainable energy sources, while one of the most abundant energy sources, heat, is being vented into the atmosphere or dumped into rivers and lakes at staggering rates. Over 70% of the energy produced globally is lost as waste heat. We have been lacking a technology capable of putting this abundant waste heat to use, and Ekstera’s innovative new Stirling engine technology is the answer we have been looking for. This talk will reveal the opportunity of heat energy that is within our reach, then describe how Ekstera's Stirling engines can convert waste heat into electricity, and outline a plan for how this technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions at a global scale.

EKSTERA is a startup that has developed innovative Stirling engine technology capable of generating clean and affordable electricity from a wide range of heat sources, such as waste heat, biomass, geothermal, and many more. The technology was originally developed in Prof. Brendan MacDonald’s lab at Ontario Tech University and he founded Ekstera to commercialize the promising technology. Ekstera is currently working towards a pilot installation later this year with a partnering steel mill to convert their abundant waste heat into electricity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce their costs.

BRENDAN MACDONALD is the co-founder and CEO of Ekstera Inc. He founded Ekstera in 2019 to commercialize the innovative Stirling engine technology that was developed in his lab at Ontario Tech University, where he has been an associate professor in mechanical engineering for over 11 years. Brendan is passionate about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing technology that can have an impact. He has won several awards for his teaching and research accomplishments. He has expertise in engines and sustainable energy technology, and has experience advising startup companies.
