DISTRICT ENERGY AND ITS FUTURE IN DECARBONIZATION OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
APRIL 4
District energy systems are centralized networks that generate and distribute thermal energy for buildings. These systems have evolved significantly over the years, incorporating advanced technologies and renewable energy sources to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This session will explore the concept of district energy, tracing its technological advancements and highlighting key opportunities that are shaping todays marketplace. Attendees will gain insights into how district energy systems can play a significant role in decarbonization of the built environment, offering sustainable and cost-effective solutions for urban areas and campuses. By leveraging economies of scale and integrating renewable energy, district energy systems are well-positioned to contribute significantly to reducing building emissions and enhancing energy resilience.

Our professionals deliver the expertise, technology, and innovation communities need to manage ageing infrastructure, demographic and population changes, the energy transition, and more.
Today’s communities transcend geographic borders. At Stantec, community means everyone with an interest in the work that we do—from our project teams and industry colleagues to our clients and the people our work impacts. The diverse perspectives of our partners and interested parties drive us to think beyond what’s previously been done on critical issues like climate change, digital transformation, and future-proofing our cities and infrastructure.
JEFF SCHROEDE
R has a background in mechanical engineering and project management. He is a Senior Principal and Practice Lead at Stantec in Ottawa, Ontario, where he specializes in sustainable high-performance buildings and district energy systems. His passion for quality design, heritage conservation, and simplicity in operations drives his work.
Jeff is known for his collaborative approach, working closely with owners and contractors to achieve innovative and comfortable solutions. He leverages his expertise in building design, building information modeling (BIM), contract administration, and system commissioning to provide effective coordination and communication from conceptual design through project completion.
As a LEED Accredited Professional with specialty, Jeff has designed mechanical and plumbing systems that exceed current building practice standards. His projects incorporate advanced design strategies such as ventilation heat recovery, solar domestic and solar air heating systems, geoexchange heating and cooling systems, waste water to energy systems, aquifer cooling, cascading hydronic systems, natural ventilation, and rainwater harvesting systems.
In his free time, Jeff enjoys walking through cities with a coffee in hand, appreciating the blend of modern and historical architecture.
